What happend so far...

What happened so far…
So we have to hand in a report till today about our activities for the course so let's summarize a bit what I did in the last time:
After the first meeting I thought about the benchmarking and found that is difficult to narrow the wide field of the use of photography with cultural heritage content on the social network facebook. I looked for some "institutions" or "official" pages on the social network facebook and how the represent cultural heritage with photos and other visual material.
Right after the first lesson Nina created a group on facebook and we joined it to organize further meetings for this course.  Another task was to create a learning diary. I decided for a blog because its quite easy to create one if you have a google account and we had one for a course in Graz before and it worked quite well.
We had a groupmeeting on the 20th of february. Everybody presented her/his thoughts and research about the benchmarking. After we talked about that theme we switched to the courses we had in the first semester. Leigh Ann told us about the cultural heritage course in Turku and we told her about the IT-related courses in Graz. It was good to get an impression what the euromachsstudents did in their first term. We also uploaded the keyinformations to the wikiversity.
It was a bit challenging to put the informations into the wikiversity but it was helpful to go to the "edit-mode" of the mainpage and see how the different styles work. Like the other I created an own page: http://fi.wikiversity.org/wiki/Cultural_Heritage_in_Facebook_-_Pages_and_Private_Impressions
Leigh Ann was so friendly to organize the book about Social Media for us. Kimi gave us the introduction but we also distributed the other chapters so that every one of us would have one with a theme that would fit him/her personal interest I got one about photography. I already read the introduction but just had started with my chapter and am not completely done yet. We will meet up next week and present the chapters to each other.
Concerning further projects for the course we had a little discussion yesterday. For the groupwork we want to work together as a whole team if that is possible. There were some suggestions in the wikiversity and we thought that it might be possible to combine these topics. On the one hand there is this Facebook Page of Pori with a lot of photos and on the other there was the idea of a cultural tracker. We ended up that a combination of these themes could be possible. Creating a cultural tracker for the city pori including the visual material from their facebookpage. We also thought of going to Pori and create a short video where the trackerdata, the facebookphotos and the real impression could get combined.
For the individual project I have a only a very vague idea. Right now theres a new trend coming on social media called "Harlem Shake" and i thought it might be nice to see how trends set up on social media and how they transform the original content into a new hybrid form in the internet. I think that this Harlem Shake might be a good example for some reasons: There is a strict pattern for how it works and have to look like. People all over the world are fascinated and create their own version with friends. I'd also want to have a look on the original dance and how the city Harlem and their inhabitants react to this trend.
We will be away for some days but when we ll have our meeting for presenting the chapters to each other we will also talk about how we want to go on with our groupwork.

1st Meeting "Benchmarking" @CafeArt

Today LeighAnn showed us a new Cafe and she was also so friendly to book a room for us so that we could have nice working session without disturbing other people or get disturbed by them. There were some paintings on the wall and internet access and also nice little things for a late breakfast.

I'm not sure how a learning diary has to look like but in a normal diary it's okay to decorate the pages with little drawings, stickers and glitter. I don't want to be that girly but illustrate this blog here with some photos I've taken while we were working.

Our theme today was benchmarking. Nathalie started and told us about her ideas for doing a research on Facebook. She wanted to compare different cultural heritages shared by different users and also have a look on certain pages on Facebook. LeighAnn had the nice idea that she could focus on Holidays which we all like because on this days people upload quite a lot and the content of this posts have quite some cultural content when they show the world how they celebrate their holidays.

LeighAnn continued and she had done a great little research about cultural institutions in Turku and how active they are in social media.

She also had a look at pocket groups in her case the group was called "The lady birds". A group of british ladies which meet each other and keep up with their british traditions.

Tom did his benchmarking in a very intersting field. He looked for big institutions who deal with cultural heritage. Not such an easy thing...at least it seemed so for me because there are hardly any big international instituions beside the UNESCO.

The UNESCO doesnt seem to be very active on social networks. Parts of it are for sure but there is no global player in this global network. We discussed if that might have to do with the thing that the UNESCO is an international project which doesnt want to promote a single national heritage but the idea of a common europe heritage and that is far more challenging.

Nina took a close look on cultural instituions and museum in Vienna and how they interact with social media. Those who are very popular and attractive for international tourists have more appearance and interaction in the web.

I really loved her speech about a project by "Schloss Schönbrunn" (our translation for LeighAnn was - Sissi's Castle :)) There is "Sissi and Franzl"App where you can take a picture of yourself and paste it on either Sissis or Franzls head and then the programm is looking for a matching partner. Seems to be a very popular app because after the invention the number of followers on social media really raised.

I was the last one in the row and had quite some problems because I think I got the task a bit wrong and mixed it up with the "individual project". My project will be about the personal use and share about cultural heritage through photos and so there are no institutions involved. I looked for some facebook pages like the "Aurora Borealis" but I have to add some more informations to make a real benchmark out of it.

Start

Today we had the first meeting for our course about Social Media Production. I guess the system in Finland is quite different to the one we have in Austria. Its more open which is good i think but its also a bit challenging for use because we have to get used to this new FREEDOM.

When I got asked what Id like to work on i was like...yeah...let me think about..ehm...yeah...gimme...a second...ehm ...a minute...ehm...an hour...maybe two days. I guess as always my frist ideas go into my favourite theme: Photography. I think that a combination of producing photography and creating some sort of reproduction of cultural heritage could be a nice idea to work on. Its a very wide field so Id have to shrinken it for sure but its a nice starting point.

Today we had our first meeting with the professor but later on we also had our first ones as studentgroup. Leigh Ann showed us the libaries at university and we ended up having some coffee/tea in the city libary and discussing a bit about how we can all go on. I liked the architecture of the building it reminded me a bit on the old buildings in Graz but the interieur was quite modern and they had a huge selection of books and a very charming athmosphere that really invites people to sit down and read there. We all got a card for the libary and I want to check the online catalogue later on.

So far we set up the next meeting for our group which will be next wednesday....

so long and thanks for all the fish
